Bristol’s long-running Playback Theatre Company offers you an exciting opportunity to experience the basics of Playback Theatre – this event is part of Diaspora 2026 and Breathing Fire’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations


Come to a friendly, relaxed workshop to create spontaneous improvised theatre.

In the workshop:
– techniques for creating lively scenarios from real stories
– varied and engaging drama games and activities
– support to make creative connections with other participants
– time to reflect on and share stories, moments and memories
– and suggestions for further training

This is a beginner level workshop, so no experience necessary. Suitable for anyone interested to know more about Playback Theatre, and wanting an enjoyable way to spend 3 hours on a Friday morning.

The workshop will be led by founding members of Breathing Fire:
Since it was established in 2006, Breathing Fire has delivered over 250 workshops and 160 performances in a range of settings including schools, prisons, theatres, community centres, clubs, and pubs. Breathing Fire performances are unique events which are created in collaboration with audiences through the stories they share. Their workshops offer a space for creativity and confidence building. explore issues and share stories in a supportive, empowering environment.

What is Playback Theatre?
Playback theatre is a unique form of interactive, improvisational theatre where audience members share personal stories / moments, which are then immediately brought to life by using drama, music and cloth. Playback Theatre creates a space for telling and exploring personal stories. Developed by Jonathan Fox and Jo Sallas (USA), Playback Theatre is performed in more than 60 countries.
