A thrilling new coming-of-age musical about teenagehood, the apocalypse, and the early 2000s girl-band pop boom, from Bristol’s Kismet Theatre
A ‘Codetta’ is a musical term describing a brief conclusion. Unfortunately, brief conclusions can often feel like the end of the world. This Codetta is a twelve-year-old girl and today is quite possibly the most confusing, overwhelming day of her life. She woke from a dream that she isn’t likely to forget anytime soon; she’s still searching for her lost toy, Pig; her best friend Suzie doesn’t seem to understand her anymore; and it’s the apocalypse.
But she’s not alone – her favourite girlband, The Daffodils, are her Greek chorus of popstars. With glittering songs, attitude-driven choreography, and some (not always appropriate) advice, Codetta is guided through everything that comes her way. Against the backdrop of early 2000s pop nostalgia, she begins the cataclysmic change of childhood into teenagehood.
Kismet draw on their own personal experiences of girlhood to create a fantastical world that takes the coming-of-age genre for a spin. Using original music, movement and storytelling, Codetta deftly portrays both the magical imagination and terrifying spirals of teenage minds. This show is restless. It is the result of our obsession with endings, the intensity of being young and the boom of female pop. We hope that Codetta will stay with you for a long, long time.
So grab your hairbrush, slam your bedroom door, and hit play on the pop renaissance.
“Part of the smartness of this show is that it isn’t afraid to show its characters as more than one thing.”
