Sing Street (Dir. John Carney, 2016)
Set in 1980s Dublin, Sing Street follows outcast Conor, who’s forced to leave his private school for a rough inner-city public school. There, he becomes enchanted by the mysterious Raphina and invites her to star in his band’s music videos. The thing is, he doesn’t actually have a band… so he forms one from a motley crew of fellow schoolboys. Written and directed by John Carney (Once, Begin Again), Sing Street is a charming coming-of-age film with romance, humour, warmth, and a pop-punk rock edge, featuring a soundtrack of classic 80s hits as well original 80s-inspired tunes.
“The delightful Sing Street spins its warm and uplifting fairytale, tugging at our melancholy heartstrings like a piece of classic bubblegum pop… I laughed, I cried, I bought the soundtrack album.”
Mark Kermode, Observer
“Like a great pop song, this film is over much too soon.”
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
“The most romantic movie you’ll find anywhere these days, brimming over with music, fun and the thrill of first love.”
Rolling Stone
“A genuine, utter delight, and really something special.”

Why we chose Sing Street for February’s Wardrobe Theatre DVD Club:
1. It’s Valentine’s Weekend, so it had to be something romantic! What’s more romantic than writing a love song for someone? Forming a band for them! Plus the band are very inspired by the ‘New Romantics’ of the 1980s, with synth-pop, frilly sleeves and eyeliner galore.
2. While there’s loads of wonderful classic rom-coms, we wanted to choose a lesser known one – and Sing Street in an underrated gem, as attested by the following comments on the YouTube trailer:
“This film is extremely underrated.” @blurrycarpenter5357
“So so underwatched. Definitely didn’t get enough attention.” @burritogamer3984
“Compared to La La Land, this was the better musical of 2016. Fight me.” @jamesgreer694
3. Yes, technically it’s a musical. But if you’re not a musical lover, don’t let that put you off! It’s one of those sneaky musicals where the songs happen at gigs and in music videos rather than characters spontaneously bursting into song. And if you are a musical lover, then hooray – it’s a musical! And what’s more, the music is tremendous (especially the glorious anthem ‘Drive It Like You Stole It’ – which’ll have you wanting to leap out of your seats and dance on the stage).
