Prevenge (Dir. Alice Lowe, 2016)
A pitch black, wryly British comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe, Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree. It’s her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth’s actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims.

Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood.

Prevenge marks the directorial debut from Lowe, who is a true triple threat, writing, directing, and acting in the film during her own real-life pregnancy.

Rated 15, but recommended for ages 18+ (contains graphic violence and gore)

“Wickedly subversive.”
★★★★ Total Film

“Funny and twisted.”
★★★★ Timeout

“A cracking directorial debut.”
★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

“This impressively peculiar film has the spark of experimental life, an unruly, unfinished quality that adds to its anarchic charm.”
★★★★ Mark Kermode, Observer

Why we chose Prevenge for this month’s Wardrobe Theatre DVD Club:
It’s October! The perfect month for a dark comedy horror, it even features a Halloween party (and some very striking spooky face-paint as shown in the above image).
• The writer-director-star Alice Lowe has a brand new film coming out this month (Timestalker), so what better time to revisit her directorial debut?
• We love comedy, and alongside Alice Lowe (Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Sightseers, Hot Fuzz), this film features an array of familiar faces from film and TV comedy, including: Tom Davis (King Gary, Murder in Successville, Paddington 2), Kavyan Novak (What We Do in the Shadows, Four Lions), Mike Wozniak (Taskmaster, Man Down), Gemma Whelan (Upstart Crow, The End of the F**cking World), Jo Hartley (After Life, David Brent: Life on the Road), and Dan Renton Skinner (Angelos Epithemiou on Shooting Stars).
• Most of the filming took place in Cardiff… not too far from Bristol! Any keen-eyed Cardiff frequenters can look out for familiar spots.
• Here at The Wardrobe Theatre, we present many shows from theatre-makers who do it all: writing, directing, producing and performing in their productions, and creating wonderfully entertaining and creative shows on low budgets with limited resources. Prevenge is a fantastic example of that same DIY spirit from the world of indie filmmaking.
