A PAPAYA Fest panel discussion exploring feminism in the UK and Latin America through the rhythms of Bullerengue
Embark on an immersive evening where the beats of Bullerengue, a vibrant Afro-Colombian cultural expression, set the stage for a dynamic exploration of feminist discourse. Our panel will navigate the harmony and discord within feminism in the UK and Latin America, spotlighting the need for unity.
We will begin the evening with a Bullerengue dance workshop by LA COMBA UK that will have us on our feet, connecting to our bodies and learning more about the historical roots of this cultural practice which embodies resilience and community.
The following discussion will be lead by our panel of academics and artists who will draw parallels between the collective strength of Latin American feminism and the challenges faced by feminists in the UK, with the aim of offering a powerful lesson in unity.

Meet our panellists:
CLEO LAKE is a community engagement professional, researcher and creative artist/producer. She was Lord Mayor of Bristol 2018-2019 and in 2021 was the lead consultant, researcher and report writer for Project T.R.U.T.H. Of African-Jamaican and Scottish roots, Lake is driven by the idea of utilising creativity, dance and expanded performance to aid civic engagement and to reframe storytelling as a resilience tool to embed cultural knowledge, empathy, understanding and cohesion.
ERIKA TEICHERT is a Lecturer in Latin American Studies at the University of Bristol. She researches and teaches about Latin American contemporary culture, politics and activism. She has written about human rights and feminist movements in Argentina and is now researching cultural responses to the climate crisis. She’s from Buenos Aires.
TATIANA MARGARITA ROA is a ethnomusicologist from Colombia. Founder of La Comba UK, her roots are in bullerengue, cumbia and all traditional rhythms.
