A Look Back at 2023-24 at The Wardrobe Theatre

Whilst The Wardrobe Theatre is closed for a short break this summer we thought it would be a good time to reflect on who and what has passed through our doors and what we’ve mananged to acheive in the last 12 months since our last break during summer 2023.

Between August 2023 and August 2024 we have:

  • Welcomed 32,091 people to a show at the theatre.
  • Created 1 brand new show, The Good, The Bad & The Coyote Ugly, with a 95% Bristol-based team which also toured to The Front Room in Weston-Super-Mare for 2 weeks (the first time we’ve been able to take one of our shows on the road since the pandemic).
  • Staged 438 performances with particular highlights including: a sold out week of Riss Obolensky’s drag-king hit Healing King Herod; a magical run of Julia Masli’s international hit comedy clown solo show, Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha; a week of stunning live animation from The Paper Cinema; The Wardrobe Ensemble’s sparkling new kids adaptation of Princess Smartypants; and a lively talk from author of the How To Train Your Dragon series, Cressida Cowell, in collaboration with bookshop, Storysmith.
  • Taken part in numerous brilliant Bristol festivals including Bristol Pride, Circus City, Lyra Festival and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s Summer Festival.
  • Our average (mean) ticket price across these 12 months was £12.19, lower than any other performing arts venue in the region.
  • Brought back our work-in-progress showcase night ITCH for local artists to try out and show something brand new.
  • Taken control of the selling of our own tickets rather than having to use a third party ticket agent.
  • Recruited a Box Office Manager and a Deputy Technical Manager to support the existing core staff and 6 new Trustees.
  • Invested in a new website for the theatre plus a new projector and projector screen so we can soon start showing films.
  • Welcomed local primary school children for private performances and tours of the theatre.

All this is made possible thanks to our dedicated staff, our wonderful front of house team, our passionate volunteers, our Board of Trustees and, most importantly, you, our incredible audiences and all the members of The Wardrobe Theatre Fan Club. Thank you!

We’re looking forward to reopening the doors at the end of August and another packed season of theatre, comedy, music, storytelling and family shows. See you soon!
