A joyful act of resistance: a tender, defiant documentary telling the untold story of Argentina’s trans rights movement through archive, photographs and the voices of the women who lived it

PAPAYA Fest’s Film Night shines a light on stories that deserve to be seen – and this year’s film is one of the most powerful yet. The military dictatorship in Argentina came to an end in 1983. For trans people it continued for more than a decade. Hunted by police, denied basic rights, forced to survive in secret. Some were exiled, others died or were killed. All of them fought.

Álbum De Familia (Family Album) is a portrait of Claudia Pía Baudracco, the activist who helped win Argentina’s landmark Gender Identity Law, told through archive, photographs, and the voices of the women who were there. A family album for a history that was never meant to be told.

Directed by Laura Casabé. Argentina, 2024. 73 mins. In Spanish with English subtitles. Followed by Q&A with special guests.
