Groundhog Day (Dir. Harold Ramis, 1993)
When cynical weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray), begrudgingly visits the quirky town of Punxsutawney to report on their traditional Groundhog Day celebrations, he finds himself trapped in a never-ending loop, forced to relive the same day over and over again… until he gets it right. With humour, heart, and a touch of absurdity, this timeless comedy explores themes of redemption, self-discovery, and second chances.
“A masterwork of high-concept comedy that effortlessly combines humour, romance, and existential reflection. A film that gets better with age.”
Guardian
“The ultimate time-loop movie, full of wit, invention, and heart. It’s a comedy with a message that never feels preachy, thanks to Murray’s impeccable comic timing.”
Time Out
“One of the few films that gets better every time you watch it – its mix of surreal humour and life-affirming philosophy is a perfect example of the power of a truly great comedy.”

Why we chose Groundhog Day for January’s Wardrobe Theatre DVD Club:
1. Our January DVD Club is on Tues 28th Jan, only 5 days before actual Groundhog Day (2nd Feb), a tradition dating back to 1887 when a groundhog is believed to predict how many more weeks of winter are to come. What better way to shake off those post-Christmas winter blues than to gather together for a classic comedy!
2. As mentioned in the above reviews, the film isn’t just very funny, but very philosophical too. If you’ve already started abandoning any New Year Resolutions by the 28th Jan, or are still yet to make some, Groundhog Day may well give you some inspiration!
3. Groundhog Day is often included in lists of the best comedy films and the most rewatchable films of all time. If you’ve already seen it, you can revel in the pleasure of another rewatch! If you haven’t seen it, now’s the time!
